Sensei

Life as a uni student need not be boring and stressful...

...especially when you have a lecturer like John Zhu!
*cue Wong Fei Hung music*

I'd like to honor this man here, because he may be one of the cool lecturers that have yet to grace me with their wisdom. John Zhu is a Chinaman, who has been teaching Mass Transfer in University of Queensland since days of yore.

John Zhu is a difficult man to understand. Not because he talks philosophy, but because the majority have a hard time distinguishing words like "drag force" from "dragon force".

John Zhu doesn't have a laser pointer, nor does he use those extendable metallic pointers. He uses a thin bamboo-ish stick which suspiciously looks freshly plucked from somewhere around the uni.

John Zhu gives proverbs which aid students in their tempestuous quest to understand Mass Transfer.

"When one wants to get out of the ocean...one doesn't need to grab the body of the whale. You only need to hold on to it's tail,"
John Zhu, CHEE3002 Lecture, 9.40 am, 1st May 2008

As many stared blankly at this notion, most quietly agree that John must've meant going into the ocean.

(With all due respect, he is a good lecturer. Although I won't say he's the best, he tries to be one)

Correction : With all "due" respect. Yes, Mir, Your Mak does read your blog...and your Prof Zhu sounds like some of my friends here...very much.

Hahaha, hey, your Prof sounds super-dee-duper cool okay! I'd very much rather hear someone talking about the Dragon Force instead of something dull like "drag force". And hey, he even dishes out cool anecdotes! Huyeah~ You rock my socks Prof John Zhu!! :D

And it's so cute that your Mak corrects your grammar. Hahaha :P

Awesome.
It's really the lecturers who make classes become interesting.
Last year, I had a guy who would jump up and down on the spot everytime he couldn't solve one of his own tute questions (which was quite often). He also confessed to us that he did most of his preparation for class and test marking while watching The Chasers. Once there was even a class discussion on croissants and brioches. And he managed to get away with all that just by the virtue of being French.

To Najlaa - I don't know if there are any, I said they looked bamboo-ish.haha. But definitely from around uni.

To "Anonymous" - Ala, salah type aja. Course I knew what it was supposed to be. Go correct Tiqah pulak.Hoho.

To Alia - Oho, he is quite something that man. Everyone chuckles when he obviously is trying his best to explain something important. Kesian la dia.

To blue - I wish my class had a discussion about food...conversation about heat transfer and what not all day can be rather daunting.

i think theres something about chinese lectures and pronunciation of the word G.
I had a chinese lecturer last year...and each time he said "Sigma"...it sounded like "sickemma"

???

welll...the whale bit. I think he's right about getting 'out of the ocean'. The only part of the whale that often pops out to surface is its tail. So when you're in deep shit ocean.Grab its tail and you'll go weeee above the surface.

thats if you're looking at getting out of 'trouble'..instead of getting into 'trouble' :D

u know, i reckon that he did mean get out of the ocean.. Why on earth do u want to enter an ocean?? So getting out would be more plausible.

We have a chinese lecturer too, who's proverbs contain 'burning duck'.. and a lot of 'what????'s

Datangla ke kelas kelas commerce, bersepah cikgu mcm tu. Especially tutorials. Haha.

To both gesh and aisyah - You know what, that actually made sense. I was thinking that the metaphor for the ocean might've been the whole subject, which is equivalent to a huge problem, and the whale was probably a tool for safe sailing...man, this dude is really deep.

To nadlique - oh, lagi la saya nk mengelak kelas commerce. Haha.

aisyah. said...

no dude, ur the one who's deep. NOT him!

You should attend one commerce class, just so that you can reaffirm to Linggesh that our stuff is indeed, tougher than your stuff. Mwahaha *evil smirk*

And yeah, that whale going OUT of the sea definitely makes more sense. Amir, you should stop thinking too much. Berkerut nanti takde orang nak kat kau. Hahaha :P

we do have lecturer like that in commerce classes eh? oh ya, my Microeconomics lecturer is quite 'eccentric' LOL.

..annd byk free time eh, bang? layout dh bertukar, ada masa nonton ironman pulak. seems sangat free (for an engineering student) to me ;)

Sir Ashcroft said...

I'd go to a commerce class, but sadly there's no time...isk,isk...

Being an engineering student doesn't mean I have to work myself to death. I'm busy only when I need to. It's a common misconception that engineers are robots...at least I'm not one. Hoho...

Anonymous said...

but do u know TOK teachers kept saying to medic students that engine students are robot? aha...gila kejam. dah 3 tahun, baru nk ckp.

Sir Ashcroft said...

Yeah, we (the engineering lot) get that a lot. I don't think that's a fair thing to say. Just because doctors deal mostly with people and engineers deal with machines don't make us less of a human. In fact, engineers work a lot with people. Engineers tend to work in a team, and we also work with our clients, so yeah, "engineers are robots" is a completely erroneous statement to me.

Hey ashcroft, I noticed that a number of your posts have got a lot of comments attached to them. A testament that people want you to blog more often! Hehe.

Now stop being an engineering robot and start being a blogging robot ;)

Sir Ashcroft said...

Alas, Mr. Nadlique, I am rather preoccupied these days with work and what not...My heart yearns for what I cannot.

If I were to become a robot, I'd make sure to be a big one that puts Power Rangers, Transformers, Voltron, and those lot to shame...muahahaha....

Nadlique said...

Tu la, next time buat commerce. Banyak masa untuk menulis blog. Two to three posts per day pun boleh.

Crap, I just realised, I'm addicted to blogging...

Sir Ashcroft said...

Heh, that might be a bit too late though. You just realized? I thought you knew that ages ago...I know I did...hahaha

Nadlique said...

Hahaha. Mana ada addicted laa. Just a place where I could kick back, relax and think about something else other than uni(*denial*....). Not that I've got much of uni anyway. Hehe.
